A child riding without a helmet in Sherman Heights was seriously injured when he was struck by a car, San Diego law enforcement authorities have reported. Based on reports, the 6-year-old boy was hit by a car when the car turned on 25th Street from L Street. The car carried the boy five to six feet along the road before stopping.

The driver of the Honda Civic involved in the crash is a 40-year-old man. While law enforcement authorities reported that the boy was transported to the hospital, his brain injuries appear to be non-life-threatening. The accident is still under investigation to determine what caused the bicycle and car accident Sunday afternoon.

Bicycle and car accidents are the leading cause of injury and death for children, the World Health Organization has said. It's the unintentional accidents that are most likely to be fatal for children ages 10-16.

It is important that children follow safety steps that can help prevent serious injury especially brain injury in the event of a bicycle, pedestrian or car accident. Children should always wear their seatbelt when riding in a car and wear their helmet while riding a bike. These two steps significantly reduce the risk of fatal injuries in the event of an accident.
