Local law enforcement authorities held sweeps for drunk drivers leading up to Thanksgiving weekend as part of the 2011 Sheriff Gore's Holiday Watch. Thanksgiving and the long weekend are popular days for drinking and driving. Each year, several people are killed in fatal car accidents caused by alcohol.

Sheriff's deputies participating in the holiday sweep last Wednesday reported that three people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, three on public intoxication and two minors for suspicion of possessing alcohol. The sweep took placed in Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar.

Other law enforcement agencies throughout the southern California area conducted similar sweeps and stops in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related accident injuries and fatalities. La Mesa police department added extra "saturation patrols" Wednesday night.

Despite the additional law enforcement officers and patrols, there were several fatal car accidents in the San Diego area. It's unclear at this time whether alcohol contributed to the fatal car accidents and pedestrian accidents.
