A California Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has been criminally charged after colliding with another vehicle killing three woman and injuring two children. The agent ignored warning signs, a stop sign and was traveling over 100 mph leading up to the intersection, according to California Highway Patrol report.

The accident occurred on Dec. 29, 2009, and forever altered the lives of the victim's families. Despite the tragic nature of the seemingly avoidable collision, it is very rare for a law enforcement officer or agent to be criminally charged for negligent activity or fatal accidents.

After a jury failed to return an indictment against the agent, prosecutors charged the agent with three charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and two charges of causing serious injuries to the children injured in the crash. The agent is not currently in custody and continues to work at the ICE in an office position.

In addition to criminal charges, the California agent has been sued in civil court for the wrongful death of the three women among other allegations. The family of the deceased is seeking millions in damages from the agent in federal court.
